While earning his doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of California in Los Angeles, Tyson Marsh received a Boren Fellowship to study Arabic in Egypt. Liking the country and research opportunities, he stayed and began teaching English in Cairo, later moving into a leadership position with the International American School in Alexandria, Egypt.
Marsh was recently hired as an assistant professor in educational leadership and policy studies (ELPS) at Iowa State University. His research interests use critical race theory and critical pedagogy to understand the relationship between communities and schools.
