University of South Florida senior, Alecia Belnavis, has received a Boren Scholarship to study Swahili in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Her interest in African history stems from the absence of the topic in her high school world history classes. Determined to learn more about East African history and culture, Alecia applied for a Boren Award by discussing the connection between unstable governments and health care crises and how this leads to terrorism. While abroad, Alecia will take history and language classes and live with a host family in order to fully immerse herself in the culture.
