Baxter Blevins, an international studies and history major at Virginia Military Institute (VMI), has been offered a 2011-2012 Boren Scholarship to continue his study of Swahili.

Baxter is currently studying at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.  As part of the NSEP African Languages Initiative, he will study Swahili at the University of Florida this summer and spend the fall semester in Tanzania.

Baxter was recently profiled in an article on FloridaToday.com.  In it, he said "My interest in Swahili and African culture came from my freshman year of college, when I became interested in the history of the continent and I grew to appreciate Africa within a broader context."  He continued on to say, "If Africa has changed me, it is to appreciate the diversity that is within Africa, and what a misunderstood place it is."
