Starting an Application
- Proceed to the online application login and click on “Register New User.”
- After you enter your email address and a password, the system will email you a verification code. You will need to check your email for the verification code (the email will come from firstname.lastname@example.org).
- After entering the verification code, you will use your userID and password to sign in.
Application System Tips
- The Boren Fellowship application includes six sections, as well as a letter of recommendation section, review application, application summary, and submit application.
- To view the entire application in order, click through the “next” buttons at the bottom of each page.
- You may only use the right navigation to skip from section to section once you have saved at least one field in a particular section. The save button is in the upper right hand corner of the application. Therefore, you may find it in your interest to use the right hand navigation after doing this for each section. You can always change your response later.
- The application will save whenever you click either “next” or “save,” or when you move to another section of the application.
You must respond to the questions in this section in order to proceed with the application. You may edit them later.
- U.S. citizen – Only U.S. citizens are eligible for the fellowship.
- Level of Study as of application deadline – If you will not be in a graduate program as of the application deadline, choose “graduating senior” or “not currently enrolled.” If you will be in a graduate program, choose “doctoral degree” or “master’s degree.”
- Graduate Institution as of application deadline – Only for applicants who will be in graduate school as of the application deadline.
- I will be matriculated in a U.S. college or university by my proposed Boren Fellowship start date – Only for applicants who are currently graduating seniors or not enrolled. Matriculation is required in order to accept the award.
- Proposed Country of Study – Choose a country of study at this time. You may always return to change it.

- Name – Enter your complete and legal name.
- Current Address – Enter your complete current address and phone number.
- Permanent Address – Enter the address and phone number where you can be reached when you are not at college.
- Email Address – Enter the email where you would like Boren to contact you.

- Graduate Institution – This will autopopulate. Should you need to change it, return to “eligibility and basic information?”

- Expected Degree Date – Should you win the scholarship; your degree date must be after the completion of the Boren-funded program.

Overseas Experience/Relevant Activities/Awards
- Previous Overseas Experience – Enter up to three countries where you have lived, traveled, or studied. Should you have more than three, enter the most relevant. Should you have no previous experience, choose zero.
- Relevant Employment History – Enter up to three relevant jobs. If you do not have relevant employment experience, choose zero.
- Relevant Activities – Enter up to three relevant activities. If you do not have any, choose zero.
- Honors and Awards – Enter up to five relevant honors or awards. If you do not have any, choose zero.
Program Information and Budget
- Study Plan Summary - Briefly address your study plan, including your plan for language study, keeping in mind that you will expand upon this in essay two. (limited to 900 characters)
- Country – This is auto populated from “eligibility and basic information.” Should you need to change it, return to that section.
- Additional Country – Multi-country studies must be well justified. Most Boren recipients study in one country.
- Language – The language of study should be appropriate for the country of study.
- Additional Language – Most Boren recipients study one language. You must continue to focus on the primary language for the whole program.
- Type of Overseas Program – Choose the type(s) of programs for your proposed program, keeping in mind that language study is required.
- Proposed Overseas Affiliation Types – Choose the type(s) of overseas institutions for your proposed program.
- Primary Proposed Overseas Affiliation Name – Choose your affiliation. If not listed, choose other, and you will be asked to enter the affiliation name.
- Additional Proposed Overseas Affiliation(s) – If you will have multiple affiliations, enter the additional names.
- Letter of Affiliation – If you have a letter, upload it here. You can also combine multiple letters, if need be. This is not required at the time of application.
- Program Composition – If you are requesting funding for a domestic summer program, choose “overseas/domestic.” Otherwise, choose “overseas.”
- Summer Domestic Program Start Date – Only for “overseas/domestic” composition. Must be the summer prior to the overseas program.
- Overseas Program Start Date – Enter the date you will begin your proposed program.
- Overseas Program End Date – Enter the date you will end your proposed program.
- Overseas Budget - Provide an estimated budget and description of each item, based on the costs of your overseas program. For further guidelines please see the budget guidelines page.
- Domestic Budget – If relevant, enter the cost of your domestic summer program. Review the budget guidelines, as the funding options are very limited.
- Native Language – Choose your native language.
- Primary Language for Boren Award – This will auto popoulate from the study abroad program section.
- Numbers of years studied or spoken – Enter the number of years you have studied or spoken the Boren language.
- Evaluate your language ability in five modalities. See the language self-assessment guide for an explanation of the drop-down choices.
- Complete the same information for up to four additional languages you have studied or spoken.
- Career Plans – Choose your career plans upon finishing your education.
- List any descriptive information about the previous response.
- Have you applied to other scholarships or fellowship for your overseas study? If so, list up to 5 – The answer to this question does not impact your Boren application review.
- How did you learn about the Boren Awards? – Choose the most relevant answer.
- Have you participated in, or been awarded, one of the following Defense Language and National Security Education Office Initiatives – Check the box if so.
- Are you a veteran of the U.S. armed services – Choose yes or no
- Have you participated in ROTC – Choose yes or no. If you have, you will be asked if you are currently in ROTC.
- The application includes two essays, the first of which is a maximum of 800 words and the second of which is a maximum of 1,000 words.
- Please read and agree to the statement by clicking the box. In order to actually submit the application, you must agree to this statement. Please Note: This does not submit your application. First, you will be asked to complete references, review your application, and click the final submit button.
- The Boren Fellowship application requires three letters of recommendation. In addition, you may include a recommender for the optional language proficiency form.

- You will automatically see three spaces to enter your required recommenders. As soon as you click “save” your recommender will get an automatically generated email from the system, so we recommend that you talk to him/her before doing so. You may click on the envelope icon if you need to send your recommender his or her login information again.
- Optional language proficiency reference
- To enter a recommender for the language proficiency form, click “add an optional recommendation” and make sure you enter that recommender’s information where it says recommendation type “language proficiency.” The language proficiency form DOES NOT count as one of your required recommendations.
- At any point, you may login into the system to see if the letters and language proficiency form are submitted. In addition, you may click on the envelope icon if you need to send your recommender his or her login information again.
- This section allows you to see what fields are missing, blank or not filled out correctly. If any required fields are missing, there will be a link to take you the part of the application to fix the information.
- This section allows you to view all parts of the application that you have entered, with the exception of the letters of reference.
- When your application is complete, click on “submit application.”
