All Boren Fellows must study a foreign language appropriate to the country in which they are studying abroad. The program will give preference to applicants studying one of the following emphasized languages:
*Boren funding for these languages is also available outside of AFLI, SAFLI, or IFLI, and Portuguese can also be studied in Brazil.
**African languages indigenous to one of the emphasized countries in Africa are also perferred.
Special Note for French and Spanish
French is a preferred language only through the African Flagship Languages Initiative, which is appropriate for students at the intermediate high or above level in French. For all other applicants, study of French or Spanish is only permissible for advanced speakers of the language. Students should focus their Boren application on achieving further language proficiency through academic coursework in French or Spanish. However, students at the intermediate level of French or Spanish in STEM fields are also eligible for funding. Any award granted for the study of French or Spanish will be made contingent upon verification, through testing, of the student's language level.
