<p>Boren Scholarships offer unique opportunities for U.S. undergraduates to study abroad in world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.</p>
The Boren Scholarships fund the study of language and culture in a program of your choosing. The Boren Scholarships do not choose a program for you nor do we recommend or suggest programs.

Boren Scholarships are awarded with preference for countries, languages, and fields of study critical to U.S. national security. Preference is also given to students who will study abroad for longer periods of time, and who are highly motivated by the opportunity to work in the federal government.

Award recipients will be selected on the basis of merit. Review panels will consider the following questions.
All Boren Scholars must study a foreign language appropriate to the country in which they are studying abroad. The program will give preference to applicants studying one of the following emphasized languages:
