In 2023, the national nominating panel selected 108 Boren Fellows and 210 Boren Scholars from 202 graduate and 538 undergraduate applications. The institutions cited below were the top recipients of these awards based on initial selections -- i.e. before declined awards and the promotion of alternates. The top schools in each category are listed, including ties.

The list below shows the countries and languages studied by Boren Awards recipients in 2023. As with the top performers above, these statistics are based on initial selections of the national nominating panel. Please note that the statistics below do not show the likelihood of receiving an award for a particular country or language. Countries and languages included in the Regional Flagship Language Initiatives received a higher proportion awards to applications. Regions with countries and languages preferred by the Boren Awards receive awards in roughly the same proportion as applications to those regions. Non-preferred countries and languages are much rarer, and are considered on an applicant-by-applicant basis. Some of the countries awarded in 2023 were not eligible for Boren funding and the alternate country option was provided to the awardee when available. (For example Ukraine and Russia awardees would have the option to study Russian in a different country in 2023/24.)
